We also had a chance to talk to Veena to ask her why her products are so great and so different from everything else that is available on the market today.

1) FatHappyandCheap: What makes Veena’s Market products better than just ordering Indian takeout?

Veena from Veena’s Market:   Veena’s Market is all about making it easy for those who want to cook Indian food at home. Cooking your own meal from another cuisine is more fun, you can have a good time with friends, you know exactly what goes into your food and our kits and recipes are created such that they will taste great even if you’re no expert in Indian cuisine. Also, we make sure our recipes are authentic. While getting take-out can be convenient, you don’t get the bragging rights that come with cooking something yourself nor is take-out food as healthy as what you can make at home. Many Indian restaurants in the US use excessive amounts of cream and oil and often many of the curries taste similar. With Veena’s Market, you get the real deal without most of the challenges that come with trying to cook Indian food yourself.

2) FatHappyandCheap: What’s your favorite item you sell on your site and why?
Veena from Veena’s Market: At the moment, my favorite dish is Meen Moilee – or as we call our kit “Cocolicious Fish”. This dish, comes from the Christian community of Kerala and is not found on Indian restaurant menus in the US. If you want a dish that is quick and easy to make, flavorful but not too spicy, this coconut milk fish curry is perfect. Cooking this dish reminds me of a friend who was a “foodie” before the term was even coined. I first made this dish about 10 years ago for her. She was silent for a minute and I was afraid she didn’t like it. But then she remarked that it was subtle, elegant and very professionally done!

3) FatHappyandCheap: What’s one thing you want people to know about Veena’s market that they may not learn by reading your site?

Veena from Veena’s Market: Veena’s Market is more than just a business to me. I put my heart into my mission of making Indian (and eventually other cuisines) accessible to anyone. People are looking for diversity in their meals without sacrificing on quality, authenticity or health and I take this seriously. Also, being a socially responsible business is very important to me. Every decision I make is based on what is the socially and environmentally friendly thing to do without sacrificing on quality. What may not be readily apparent from the website is that most of the spices used are organic. The few spices that are not are simply not available in organic. The plastic used in the packaging is recyclable. All the shipping materials used are made from 100% recycled content. Lastly, more than just producing cook-it-yourself kits, I strive to be a bridge between very different cultures through blog posts and information shared on Twitter and Facebook pages.

Giveaway eligibility and rules: Note Veena’s Market giveaways are only open to Seattle residents only so that you can pickup the kits in the Seattle Area- you can only enter to win one product.
